Candlemas or Purification of the Virgin Mary occurs on February 2nd of the old Julian calendar. On this day the women traditionally would proceed to the local church carrying lighted candles, as a sign of the Virgin Mary reentering the church after the birth of Jesus. The traditional color of the day is white.
