Shrove Tuesday falls six weeks and five days before Easter. It marked the last day before the beginning of the Lenten season. The day was marked by feasting and revelry, even in churches. It now occurs as the festival Mardi Gras. On Shrove Monday public sporting events were held. The nobles would have jousting competitions, and villagers would hold games such as Tug of War, skipping competitions Chasing a Greased Pig, marbles, Climbing a Greased Pole, and Camping. As well there was Bull and Bear Baiting, Cock fighting. Another minor tradition was those wishing to change their fortune would smash their pottery.
